Reclaiming Voices, Building Change
Tsega’s Sisterhood is a survivor-led group advocating for systemic reform, cultural change, and justice for victims of gender-based violence in Ethiopia.
Tsega never wanted to be a symbol.
She wanted to live her regular life, go to work, return home safely—things that should be simple, but for women like her, often are not.
That changed the day she was taken—not just her freedom, but her sense of safety, her trust in the system meant to protect her. Nine days of captivity, fear, and the slow realization that no one was coming.
But she came back. Not just to survive, but to speak. And when she did, she saw the same silence in the eyes of countless others. Silence that needed to be broken.
That’s why Tsega Sisterhood exists. It’s more than an group—it’s a declaration. Survivors don’t just endure. They rise, they fight, they change the world.
In the depths of my captivity, I discovered that silence was a prison. By breaking that silence, I reclaimed my voice—and with it, the power to ignite change.”
Tsega Belachew
The Birth of a Movement
Tsega’s ordeal could’ve broken her. Instead, it ignited her resolve. She founded Tsega’s Sisterhood to give survivors a voice. This is a survivor-led fight for justice, born from one woman’s refusal to stay silent.
Why We Fight
Gender-based violence scars women daily. Systems fail. Cultures excuse it. Tsega’s story isn’t unique—but her response is. We’re here to end the silence and rewrite the future.
